Frequently Asked Questions — Garden Fencing in Edinburgh

What types of fencing do you offer?

Edinburgh Garden Fences specialise in a wide range of timber fencing styles including hit and miss, ranch style, single sided, slatted panels, woven panels, omega lattice, horizontal lattice, square horizontal, and arched lattice. We also offer bespoke made-to-measure solutions tailored to your garden and requirements. Visit our Timber Fences and Panel Fences pages to see examples of our work.

How much does a garden fence cost?

The cost of a garden fence depends on a number of factors including the style of fence, the length required, the terrain of your garden, and whether removal of an existing fence is needed. We provide free, no-obligation quotes tailored to your specific requirements. Please get in touch or use our enquiry form on the home page and we will get back to you promptly.

How long does fence installation take?

Installation time varies depending on the size and complexity of the job. A straightforward garden fence can typically be installed in one to two days. Larger or more complex projects may take longer. We always aim to complete work efficiently and with as little disruption to you and your neighbours as possible.

What wood treatment do you use?

All of our timber fencing is pressure treated. This process forces preservative deep into the wood fibres, far more effectively than surface painting or dipping. Pressure treatment protects the timber against rot, decay, and insect attack, giving your fence a much longer working life — particularly important in the Scottish climate.

How long will my fence last?

Thanks to our pressure treatment process, our fences are built to last. Under normal conditions you can expect a well-maintained timber fence to last 15 years or more. We build all our fences with longevity in mind, using quality materials and proven installation methods designed to withstand the worst of the Scottish weather.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes. We give a 5 year guarantee on all of our products and workmanship. We are a dedicated, professional company and take great pride in the quality of our work. If you have any concerns after installation we will always be happy to come back and address them.

Do I need planning permission for a fence?

In most cases you do not need planning permission for a garden fence in Scotland, provided it does not exceed 2 metres in height. However, if your property borders a road or public footpath the maximum permitted height is 1 metre. There may also be restrictions if you live in a conservation area or in a listed building. We always recommend checking with your local council if you are unsure before work begins.

Can you remove my old fence?

Yes, we can remove and dispose of your existing fence as part of the installation. We will take care of all the old materials so you do not have to worry about disposal. Just let us know when you get in touch and we will include this in your quote.

Do you repair storm-damaged or blown-down fences in Edinburgh?

What is the best type of fence for Scottish weather?

For the wet and windy Scottish climate, pressure treated timber is essential. All the fences we build are pressure treated to protect against rot, damp and decay. In terms of design, hit and miss fencing is particularly well suited to exposed Edinburgh gardens — the gaps between the boards allow wind to pass through, reducing pressure on the fence and making it far less likely to blow down in a storm.

What is a hit and miss fence?

A hit and miss fence is a style of custom timber fence where vertical boards are fixed alternately on either side of a central rail — one board on the front, the next on the back, and so on. This creates a fence with privacy on both sides, while leaving small gaps that allow wind to pass through. Hit and miss fencing is one of our most popular designs in Edinburgh, especially for gardens that are open to the elements.

What is a ranch style fence?

A ranch style fence uses horizontal timber boards fixed to upright posts, creating a clean, contemporary look. It is a popular choice for modern Edinburgh gardens and is available in a range of heights and board widths. We build all our ranch style fences to measure using pressure treated timber.
